Matthias Motzigemba – Head of Laser Communications, Tesat Spacecom

Matthias, we look forward to welcoming you to the Mobility Connectivity Conference at Space Tech Expo Europe! Could you please tell us a little bit more about yourself and your role at Tesat Spacecom?

Thank you Nicole for this possibility and the warm welcome. I have been working in the telecommunications market for more than 30 years. Since 2011 I am with TESAT to transfer telecommunication from earth to space. My actual role is Head of Sales for Laser Communication.

You will speak on the Panel: Combining Hybrid Terrestrial and Non-terrestrial Networks to Bring Resilient Communications to Fleet Operations panel session at the Mobility Connectivity Conference. What role will optical communications play in future hybrid networks?

The terrestrial networks are counting on the global fibre networks for high data rate and connectivity to the internet. We bring the fibre to space by the use of laser communication and play the same role.

How do you see satellite communications and terminals develop over the next couple of years?

TESAT has seven different terminal designs for different applications. That offers a wide new range of use cases for Satcom with inter satellite links or space to ground links as well. Data rates between 100 Mbps to 100 Gbps and distances between 100km to 90,000km.

What makes optical communications so promising for end-user verticals such as the maritime and aviation industries?

To get connectivity with high data rates where no other media is available!

What are you most looking forward to at the show?

To discuss with operators new business cases and applications where optical communication in space could make the difference.
