Interview: Andreas Nil, Managing Director, MediaMobil Communication GmbH

Date posted: 2023

After completion of the Electrical Engineering study I started my professional career as research assistant in the Microwave Department at Bremen University. In the framework of different R&D projects I was involved in the development of the first maritime high speed satellite services. For commercial exploitation of the results I founded MediaMobil in 1994 and have worked as managing director since then.

Mitigating Climate Change and Increasing Geospatial Intelligence Through Next-gen Remote Sensing Technology

Date posted: 2023

Most Europeans remember the weather events on the continent in recent years: from severe flooding in Belgium and Germany in 2021, to extreme drought across in Southern parts which extended across all of Europe during the Summer the same year. Remote sensing capabilities provide tremendous opportunities to understand how such events impact us while also helping to predict them.

Satcom for the Future: Autonomous Connectivity Any Place, Anywhere, Anytime

Date posted: 2023

Satellite communications (satcom) in Europe is soon to be lifted (or lowered!) to a new level as the bloc is taking a uniform approach to a future low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. This constellation is set to deliver and offer dual-use services to commercial, government and defence purposes, and avoids the need to rely on foreign allies. In the post-pandemic world, the reliance on connectivity in remote areas is ever-growing and as such, mobility connectivity remains a vital part of satcom.

Pulling Together on In-space Sustainability: From Debris Mitigation, to Legislation, to ISAM

Date posted: 2023

Sustainability and space used to be in two very different siloes. Yet nowadays, the two go hand in hand more than ever. The safe use of space is imperative to the successful use of its downstream applications, microgravity research and exploration missions. Knowing space is safe to use through space debris mitigation, space situational awareness and space traffic management is key.

So we’re putting humans on the moon… what’s next?

Date posted: 2022

We have already witnessed the impact of commercialisation on the low-Earth orbit (LEO) market, with numerous companies emerging from this new paradigm. The value of the services offered by LEO applications to Earth has largely supported this growth; be it in agriculture, navigation, weather, communication and many more existing and emerging industries.

Securing Space: Addressing the Urgency to Protect Space Assets Against the Increasing Threat of Cyber Attacks

Date posted: 2022

Cybersecurity. The buzzword that is used over and over not only in the tech world but in our daily lives, reminding us to protect our software from threats of cybercrime. These warnings do not come unheeded.  In fact, in 2021, businesses saw a 50% increase in cyberattacks per week compared to 2020, and it is estimated that around 30,0000 websites are hacked every single day.

Anyplace, Anywhere, Anytime: Meeting Post-pandemic Maritime and Aviation Connectivity Expectations

Date posted: 2022

Real-time high-data rate connectivity at any place is a hot topic within the maritime and aviation industries. The pandemic has shifted expectations and demand for (satellite) connectivity in remote areas at sea and in the air. With upgrades in technology, ground infrastructures, terminals and satellite capabilities, next-gen connectivity onboard an airline’s or ship owner’s fleet is closer than ever – but some key hurdles are yet to be overcome.

From Hybrid Terrestrial and Non-Terrestrial Networks to Next-gen Ground Terminals: Outlining Requirements for Mobility Satellite Connectivity

Date posted: 2022

A key connectivity requirement within the maritime and aviation sectors is high-data transfer in remote areas. Having continuous access to such connectivity is important to address and resolve industry trends and challenges such as decarbonisation, autonomy, remote maintenance and passenger and crew entertainment and wellbeing. Low-Earth orbit (LEO) constellations combined with satellites in other orbits, as well as a sound satellite ground infrastructure combined with terrestrial networks can bring great potential to these mobility end-user markets.

Accelerating Space Exploration Through International Collaboration

Date posted: 2021

On 4th October 1957, the first artificial satellite was launched in to orbit by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). The satellite, named Sputnik, was a landmark mission which brought space exploration to public attention. Taking place during the time of the Cold War, this became part of what is know as the ‘space race’ between the United States and the USSR.

Ensuring Market Resilience for European Space in the Wake of the Pandemic

Date posted: 2021

The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the global economy on a massive scale, costing a combined estimate of between $16- $35USD trillion by the year 2025. With the majority of the world’s major economies going in to a recession during this time, the hit to many industries was unprecedented.
